Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) Launch Date Confirmed

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is set to go live on 12 February 2024, marking a crucial milestone in our commitment to environmental sustainability.

𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀:

📅 𝗟𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗵 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗱: BNG will be in effect from 12 February 2024, requiring major developments to deliver net gains for biodiversity, ensuring positive outcomes for nature and local communities.

🏡 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗿 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: BNG will be mandatory for new planning applications for major development under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990, encompassing residential developments with 10 or more dwellings or sites exceeding 0.5 hectares.

🔄 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗦𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘀: BNG for small sites will apply from 2 April 2024, providing an extended transition period. This includes residential developments with 1 to 9 dwellings or sites smaller than 0.5 hectares, and commercial developments with less than 1,000 square meters of floor space or sites under 1 hectare.

🏗️  𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗲𝘀: BNG will initially apply to new applications for planning permission, excluding retrospective applications. Developers can voluntarily implement BNG on developments falling under different permission routes.

🔄 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗿𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: BNG applies to planning applications made on or after 12 February, with exemptions for planning permissions granted before this date. Section 73 variations post-12 February are also exempt.
